Outline
The concept of Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) was proposed in Japan ahead of other countries. The concept has got into the limelight as an important theme of the materials research field since an original idea was invented by a research group in the suburbs of Sendai in 1984, and research activities have spread not only in Japan but around the world as well.
The Functionally Graded Materials FORUM of JAPAN was established in 1988 and it marked the 25th anniversary in 2013. Our forum conducted many FGMs projects with national support, and we have led the world in the FGMs research field. Our forum has been and will be active internationally in pursuit of further possibility of FGMs that originated in Japan.
